GET IT RIGHT is an awareness campaign for the authentic representation of transgender people in media. Growing up in a small city in Mexico, information about being transgender started to be introduced by various forms of media, especially in television. This information was ambiguous and portrayed transgender people, especially transgender women in negative ways by using stereotypes, prejudice, victimizing, ridicule and other harmful means. When my city’s community was unaware of what being transgender was, they only had the media’s depictions to learn from. This has led me to research theories in the area of Mass Media which is the Media Dependency Theory by Sandra Ball and Melvin DeFleur. The area I am correlating is the area of Cognitive Development with the Schema Theory by Jean Piaget and the Gender Schema Theory by Sandra Bem. I am basing the framework of my research on these theories, which has led me to the root problem mentioned above.
